Defending champion Kim Clijsters has moved to the round of 16 at the U.S. Open by winning the final 12 games in her 6-3, 6-0 victory over No. 27 Petra Kvitova. Twelfth-seeded Elena Dementieva beat 24th-seeded Daniela Hantuchova 7-5, 6-2 Friday in the third round of the U.S. Open. Dementieva, the 2004 runner-up at Flushing Meadows, has reached the semifinals three times but lost in the second round last year. A year ago at the U.S. Open, American teenager Melanie Oudin told the world to "BELIEVE," with her sneakers and her play. Among those she motivated: Beatrice Capra, an 18-year-old from Ellicott City, Md., and a wild-card entry who is following in Oudin's footsteps at Flushing Meadows, albeit without any mottos on her shoes.
A day after Victoria Azarenka collapsed on court during a singles match at the U.S. Open, she and partner Dinara Safina pulled out of women's doubles. Azarenka and Safina originally were scheduled to face the ninth-seeded pair of Cara Black and Anastasia Rodionova in the first round of doubles Thursday.
Qualifier Kei Nishikori of Japan has upset 11th-seeded Marin Cilic at the U.S. Open in a five-set marathon that took a minute short of five hours with temperatures in the mid-90s. Nishikori won Thursday's second-round match 5-7, 7-6 (6), 3-6, 7-6 (3), 6-1. Two years ago, he reached the fourth round to become the first Japanese man to get that far at the U.S.
Richard Gasquet has helped France improve on its strong U.S. Open showing with a 6-3, 6-4, 6-2 upset over sixth-seeded Nikolay Davydenko of Russia. Gasquet, ranked 38th, moves onto the third round. Even before Thursday's match, he was helping make history -- one of a record 12 Frenchmen to make it to the second round at Flushing Meadows.

Andy Roddick found it infuriating that a lineswoman who called him for a foot fault was wrong about which of his shoes touched the line. The 2003 U.S. Open champion had much bigger problems Wednesday night at Flushing Meadows, though, and bowed out in the second round with a 3-6, 7-5, 6-3, 7-6 (4) loss to 44th-ranked Janko Tipsarevic of Serbia, whose go-for-broke style paid off with 66 winners.
Melanie Oudin can show up at next year's U.S. Open back as the up-and-coming teenager just hoping to win some matches. The darling of the 2009 Open acknowledged relief Wednesday after her run ended this time after only two rounds. Oudin's opponent was the one who was seeded, but the 18-year-old felt the pressure of the favorite in front of the big crowd of Louis Armstrong Stadium.
Wimbledon runner-up Tomas Berdych never found his rhythm against the rarity of the serve-and-volley style of Michael Llodra. The seventh-seeded Berdych lost in straight sets in the first round of the U.S. Open on Wednesday. Llodra, ranked 35th and known more as a doubles player, won 7-6 (3), 6-4, 6-4. "I don't even know if I played well or not," Berdych said.
