Roger Federer experienced quite a range of emotions these past two Australian Opens. A year ago, he sobbed on court after losing a thrilling final in five sets. Federer was all smiles Sunday after rather easily beating Andy Murray 6-3, 6-4, 7-6 (11) for a fourth championship in Melbourne and 16th Grand Slam title overall.


More than just a champion, Roger Federer was recognized Sunday as a humanitarian. A charity match initiated by Federer to raise money for Haiti earthquake victims has raised more than $600,000, said Tennis Australia president Geoff Pollard. The Jan. 12 earthquake that has killed at least 150,000 in Haiti struck three days before the start of the Australian Open.
The weight of a nation's expectations broke Andy Murray's composure Sunday after Roger Federer broke his game. Receiving his runner-up prize, Murray's voice faltered and he blinked away tears as he apologized to his fans at home for not bringing home the first British trophy in a men's tennis major in 74 years.
In mixed doubles, practice time is a privilege. Top-seeded Leander Paes and Cara Black spent all of 45 minutes warming up together in their run to the Australian Open final. Former champion Lleyton Hewitt has pulled out of next month's SAP Open tournament in San Jose after undergoing surgery on his right hip. Hewitt told tournament director Bill Rapp on Saturday that he needed to withdraw. He had the operation Thursday and hopes to be back in time to play the French Open.

American twins Bob and Mike Bryan won their fourth Australian Open doubles title, defeating Daniel Nestor of Canada and Serbian Nenad Zimonjic 6-3, 6-7 (5), 6-3 on Saturday. The top-seeded Bryans picked up their eighth Grand Slam title in doubles. They faced two break points in the ninth game before winning the opening set when Zimonjic hit a backhand long.
