The recently unretired Kim Clijsters has easily won her first match at the U.S. Open since taking home the 2005 title. She beat Viktoriya Kutuzova of Ukraine 6-1, 6-1. Clijsters went ahead 5-0 in 20 minutes and stayed in control throughout, wrapping up the victory by reeling off the last 11 points. The 26-year-old Belgian left tennis in 2007, got married and had a child.

Mardy Fish of the United States withdrew from the U.S. Open on Sunday because of a rib injury. The 25th-seeded Fish, of Tampa, Fla., was a quarterfinalist at Flushing Meadows last year. He had been drawn to face Daniel Koellerer of Austria in the first round. Instead, Koellerer will play Rui Machado of Portugal.

Caroline Wozniacki believes this is her time. The 19-year-old from Denmark won her second consecutive Pilot Pen tennis championship Saturday beating Elena Vesnina 6-2, 6-4 in the final tuneup for the U.S. Open. Spain's Fernando Verdasco won the men's title, besting American Sam Querrey 6-4, 7-6 (6).
